NEMA partnered with the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) in 2003 to develop a standardized training course for newly appointed state emergency management directors. This State Director Training course is held annually and includes presentations by subject-matter experts, class discussions, as well as problem-solving activities based on real-life events. These activities use a variety of disaster and emergency situations and allow the new emergency management state director to exercise decision-making skills and to share experiences as a state director.
The target audience for the course includes state directors of emergency management and deputy state directors who have been in their positions fewer than three years. EMI provides reimbursement of travel costs to attendees.
