Dear Colleagues:

I invite you to join me in the great state of Alaska for the 2005 NEMA Annual Conference.  This conference provides an opportunity for us to come together to discuss the many challenges that face us today, share solutions, grow professionally and network with peers.  During the conference we will hear from those involved in shaping the future of homeland security and emergency management, strengthen relationships with our partner organizations, and share NEMA's views on all hazards emergency preparedness.

It continues to be NEMA's goal to enhance the overall capabilities of emergency management to meet the challenge of any and all disasters facing our country.  Please join us in Anchorage, Alaska to learn and share with your fellow NEMA members and emergency professionals.

Sincerely,

Dave Liebersbach
NEMA 2004-2005 President

Travel and Accommodations

The 2005 NEMA Annual Conference will be headquartered at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.  A block of rooms has been arranged for Conference attendees, however, it is limited so please make your reservations early. The rate is $161 plus tax per night.

To make your reservations, please call the Anchorage Hilton directly at (907) 272-7411 and identify yourself as a NEMA Conference attendee to receive the discounted rate.  The NEMA Conference rooming block is limited and will be offered based on availability until August 12, 2005.  Following that date, space and rate will be assigned at the sole discretion of the hotel.

*Please reserve only the number of rooms to accommodate confirmed conference attendees.  Past conferences have seen the room block fill very early, necessitating an overflow hotel be contracted, only to see large numbers of cancellations at the original hotel just prior to the conference.  This makes NEMA vulnerable to fees for not meeting the room block and inconveniences other conference attendees who are forced to stay at different hotels. Your cooperation in this is appreciated.

Climate and Conference Attire

The dress code for NEMA Conference meetings and activities is business attire.

The Summer climate in Anchorage is similar to San Francisco's spring weather, with temperatures that can reach into the 70's. Summer highs average 65 degrees F/18 degrees C.  Visitors may notice a drop in temperature when taking a chairlift ride to the top of Mt. Alyeska or hiking in the nearby Chugach Mountains, so it's a good idea to bring a jacket for those activities. The key to comfort in Alaska is wearing layers of clothing, then peel on or off as needed.

Security

The safety and security of all NEMA conference attendees is of the utmost importance.  To this end, NEMA has implemented and will enforce the following measures at all NEMA Conferences:

  • All registered conference attendees will be required to present a state or federally issued, photo identification and sign in, in order to pick up a badge and conference materials and the Registration Booth.

  • Only those displaying a NEMA Conference badge will be admitted to NEMA Conference related functions.
